Part 3

Chapter 3: The Everlasting Silence

2 days pass and I’ve got nothing but silence from Mina. I’ve Called her NINE times with nothing answering. I’ve texted her a series of times.

“Hey.”

Read but no reply

“It’s me Cade.”

Read but no reply

“Please talk to me.”

Read but no reply

“Are you going to my school or somewhere else? I haven’t seen you around.”

Read but no reply

“Mina… Please stop leaving me on read. Just talk to me. We don’t have to talk about the death wish. I just want you.”

Read. “ Hi Cade.”

I scream a silent scream of joy. “ Hi Mina.”

“What do you want to talk about Cade.”

“I don’t know…”

“Then why am I here?”

“I don’t know…”

“If you can’t answer then I should go.”

“No..”

“And why not?”

“I can’t handle the silence.”

“Then let's talk about that.”

“What?”

“Everlasting Silence.”

“Elaborate.”

“Everlasting Silence. The silence that is so loud. It rings like church bells. Reminding me that no matter how hard I pray nothing will change. The kind of silence that lasts so long until it eventually suffocates you. It’s a slow and painful process. At first you don’t hear it, but out of nowhere, It hits you all at once. It knocks you back and stuns you. It hovers low above your face with a glare so ignorant and terrifying. It spits in your face as you try to pull yourself up. You will never be able to get up until you hear a voice. You can’t hear a voice until your voice is heard.”

“Are our voices heard?”

“Yours? For sure. Cade, you are an amazing guy with such strong strength. You just need to step out of your comfort zone once in a while. Take a risk. You are in the silence, but not the everlasting silence. Cade, scream as loud as you can. Make your voice heard.”

That day I forgot to ask her about her voice.

“Thanks Mina-San”

“Go to sleep dork.”

“Goodnight Mina.”

“Goodnight.”
