Part 4

-3-

“Your brother will, of course, do the intelligent thing and marry Glyness. We had hoped that, given the success of your last novel, you would consider a sensible change of profession, one more in keeping with a man of your, social standing, education and abilities. Instead you seem bent on frittering away your time on a demeaning occupation, amusing yourself with that common little opportunist who no doubt thinks she’s made the catch of a lifetime! You could easily have cultivated a harmless liaison in the traditional manner, with a woman infinitely more sophisticated and subtle of mind, but as your brother says, you’ve gone and married the hired help . . .”
