SHIKHANDI

PROLOGUE:

AT THE OUTSET I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE MYSELF AS DR. MOGANASUNDARI, GYNECOLOGIST, IN USA AND THOUGH I AM NOT A BORN WRITER YET I HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY READING THE NOVELS WRITTEN BY THOMAS HARDY, ALEXANDRE DUMAS, DICKENS, WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE AND R.K. NARAYAN TO WRITE NOVELS IN ENGLISH, MY MOTHER TONGUE.

The entire world knows that 'The Ramayana' and 'The Mahabharata are the two eyes of every Hindu. The protagonist of The Ramayana, Lord Sri. Ramachandra , is a monogamist who is exemplary how a man should lead the life while on the other hand, the Mahabharata, the protagonist, Lord Krishna, is a polygamist who is exemplary in teaching us how a man should not lead the life.

Here I feel delight in presenting my short story, under the title," SHIKHANDI" WHICH HAS BEEN EXCERPTED FROM THE GREAT EPIC," The Mahabharata" written by the great sage Veda Vyasa in this 'Classic' category for the feast of the readers to their mind and taste.

Dr. Moganasundari.

************************************************************************ KING DRUPADA OF PANCHALAS

Birthdate:estimated between 3225BCE and 3105BCEDeath:December 06, -3067

Kurukshetra, Kurukshetra, Haryana, India (MAHABHARATA WAR)Immediate Family:

Son of King Prishata PRISHTA

Husband of SUDESHNA Panchalan and KOKILA DEVI Prashati Drupada

Father of King DHRISHTADYUMNA Drupada; SATYAJIT Drupada; UTTAMAUJA Drupada; VRIKA Drupada; PANCHALYA Drupada and 7 others

King Drupada, swaying Panchalas, had no heir after him and he was very sad. It's the wont of the ancient kings and emperors to marry a number of women and kept them in their harems. Drupada was not exceptional.

Was he impotent? Were the queen or his concubines "Nulligravida or "Nulliparae"(nulligravida=:a woman who has never been pregnant) Nulliparas= women who has never borne a child)

(Recently, a Government school Biology teacher in Madras State, India, coitioned with a fourteen years old student and she became pregnant) King Drupada must have learnt the techniques from that Biology teacher and the teen aged girl must have been exemplary to his queens in his harems)

So the king was very sad. He began to pray and worshipped Lord Shiva for the boon to procreate to his queen to give birth a male but not a female child.

At last, Lord Shiva, pleased with his penance, appeared before him and asked him for the boon for which Drupada implored Lord Shiva to grant him for the male child but not a female child.
