Part 3

Phoenix gave Bailey a tour of the rest of the house, but he couldn't get his mind off the lake.

"So, what do you want me to do out here while you're taking care of business or whatever it is you do when you're here?" Bailey asked.

"How about getting us food," he said.

"Oh, sure. I'm the woman, so I get the food," Bailey said.

"That's not what I meant and you know it," Phoenix snapped back.

"Lighten up. I was just joking." But sometimes she wondered if Phoenix wanted her for a girlfriend or a mother.

Phoenix looked out the window, where he noticed a dark figure standing on the grass looking at the lake. The reflection of the moon rippling in the center of the lake put the dark figure in silhouette.

He looked at the houses across the lake. All were dark, except one. One had every light on in every window that he could see.

"Whoever lives there must have insomnia or a major caffeine problem," he mumbled.

He looked at the lake one more time and then went back to the master bedroom and got under the covers, glad that Bailey was already asleep.
