Part 3

“Johnny, “ Uncle Frank called out, “Have you finished your homework? Are your teeth brushed?”

“Yes Sir. I have, “ I responded.

“I can’t believe you are finishing up second grade. Get plenty of rest. Tomorrow, and the entire week, you will be taking tests to see how much you learned this year. Your parents would be so proud of you. I wish they were here…” Uncle Frank’s voice trailed off with a quiver.

We both stood in the middle of the living room, looking down at the brown, tattered carpet. The deafening silence lasted for, what seemed like, an eternity. Slowly, I lifted up my eyes, walked gradually to the stone fireplace, and stared at the picture of my parents, that was framed so neatly in the gold and silver frame with a piece of glass, in the middle of it, to protect the picture.
