Chase holds his hand on the small of my back to lead me toward the bar. God, he is so smooth, I have to remind myself to breathe.

After ordering drinks, we lean back and look at each other. I am determined to stare him down even if it kills me. I will not flinch, I will not flinch. He speaks first without breaking eye contact. "You never told me your last name."

"Nowak."

"Gretchen Nowak… sounds like someone from a Nancy Drew mystery."

My attempt to maintain a serious expression fails. "Do you really want to go for round two here Chase?"

Throwing his head back, laughing, he finally breaks that smoldering gaze. "Gretchen, I could banter with you all night. I find it entirely entertaining."

I lean forward, crossing my arms on the table. "You're a real player, aren't you?"

That wipes the smile off his face. "Actually, no, not at all."

I want to figure out if this is his usual M.O. or not. "Come on, look at you, you're the whole package, with the panty-melting smile to boot."

His eyes widen and he rakes his fingers through his hair. "Panty-melting smile? Jesus, I don't even know how to respond to that. And you accused me of unsettling you."

I'm on a roll and not prone to subtlety, so the unease he's exhibiting does nothing to make me rethink my attack. "Why don't you try the truth?"
